Abstract

Violence encompasses harmful behavior intended to injure or abuse others and can manifest in various forms. It can be categorized into three subtypes: self-directed violence, interpersonal violence, and collective violence. Among these, interpersonal violence, especially domestic violence, is a prevailing concern across diverse settings and among people from different backgrounds. This study aims to provide a description of domestic violence as depicted in Anne Bronte's novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and to analyze the portrayal of traumatic disorder resulting from the domestic violence through the perspective of psychoanalysis. The data of this descriptive qualitative research were analysed using Sigmund Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis by interpreting the traumatic disorder resulting from domestic violence in the novel. The results of the study indicate that The Tenant of Wildfell Hall effectively portrays the various forms of domestic violence, going beyond physical abuse to encompass emotional, sexual, psychological, and neglectful forms of mistreatment. This depiction highlights the complexity of abuse and its detrimental effects on the victim, exemplified by Helen's experiences. The analysis reveals the profound impact of domestic violence on Helen's psyche, leading to the development of traumatic disorders, specifically symptoms resembling posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The study also emphasizes the use of defense mechanisms employed by Helen to cope with her trauma, including repression, denial, rationalization, regression, and sublimation.
