Abstract

Gender equality is a condition where men and women have equal access and power in terms of financial independence, education, and personal growth to determine their own lives. This study aims to examine the structure of critical discourse texts (macro, superstructure, micro) and to understand the meaning of social cognition and social context in Emma Watson's speech at the HeForShe Campaign. Qualitative approach, especially that of Teun a Van Dijk is used to reveal the problem of distribution of power, influence and resources in society. Emma Watson’s speech is selected as it urges audiences to take action to solve the terrible situation of gender inequality in many nations, which affects both men and women. As a result, Emma Watson politely requested that males be aware of this issue. The findings reveal that meanings generated from observable things such as semantic, syntactic, stylistic, and rhetorical features present in paragraphs, phrases, and words are also included. The concept of social cognition is clear in Emma Watson's delivery of the entire text, which aims to eradicate gender inequity and create awareness of men and women working together to solve the problem. Furthermore, as a UN Goodwill Ambassador and a world-renowned actress, Emma Watson has a large social effect on her audience. As a speaker is one of them effective way to highlight the issue of gender inequality and that seems controversial because it gets a lot of attention from the wider community to be more aware in dealing with this problem.
