Abstract

Slang is an informal speech pattern employed by members of a certain community, most frequently by teenagers. Slang, notably British and Lincolnshire slang, was widely used in the dialogue of the first season of the British television series "My Mad Fat Diary." This research aims at finding out the type and meanings of each slang word employed by the teenage characters in the British TV Series “My Mad Fat Diary” season 1 and the function underlying the teenage characters’ motive to employ the slang words. It also aims at revealing whether positive or negative effects of slang employed by teenage characters after being uttered. For these purposes, interactionist sociolinguistics was applied as the conceptual framework of the study. Descriptive qualitative research was employed with documentation analysis techniques in analysing 307 data. The study's findings revealed that the fresh and creative type was the most prevalent type employed by the teenage characters. The main function teenage characters used slang was to initiate relax conversations in order to create a comfortable environment that would help them maintain their friendship. The slang's effect demonstrated that "positive effect" was the most predominant in each slang used by the teenage characters there, indicating that the feelings of friendliness and adaptability were the key drivers behind each slang uttered. This study hopes to enrich the sociolinguistic framework by analysing the usage of slang by teenage characters in 1990s in a setting of British TV series.
