Abstract

Reading in any language plays as an essential skill in educational and social purposes. Nowadays, there are many ways to teach and develop student English Skills. One of the media that can be utilized to develop children's English ability as a second language learners is mobile digital games. This research aims to study whether the application Elevate can be used as an alternative solution of digital game-based learning for practicing students’ English language skills, especially reading skills. This study applied mixed method using qualitative descriptive analysis and quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Qualitative descriptive applied to answer the question how can Elevate assist students to develop their reading abilities? While Quantitative quasi-experimental design applied to answer the question how are the results of improving students' reading skills after using Elevate as a daily practice? This research participant were tenth grade student at SMA K YSKI Semarang. The research result shows that the Elevate game serves several games on the reading section that might be utilized to improve students reading ability by increasing some of the cognitive reading skills. Further, the implementation of the Elevate game as daily practice to improve reading ability was generated to have moderate effectiveness considering the N-Gain average percentage and the result of independent T-Test rate assure that Elevate game can improve student’s reading ability. However, the students’ engagement in playing the game found to be below expectations that the average students playing intensity was slightly low during one week of treatment period
