Abstract

Critical discourse analysis (CDA) is a research that comprises several different theoretical and methodological approaches to studying language. CDA views language as a form of social practice, and systematically investigates hidden power relations and ideologies embedded in discourse. According to Foucault (2002), discourse reflects the subject's behaviour and idea. Subjects are classified into dominant which produces dominant discourse and dominated subject which produces alternative discourse. Discourse is an arena of war where every subject is intertwined in order to fight for their interests. This research is a qualitative study with descriptive analysis method that carried out about academic freedom issues in one of Central Java Universities in Indonesia by exploring the dominant discourse made by the University Leaders as the dominant subject and the alternative discourse made by the University student’s organisation as the dominated subject with CDA approaches. In order to collect the data, the researcher conducted purposive sampling method. This study aims to explore; (1) The Dominant Discourse and its Implication to the Academic Freedom, (2) The Alternative Discourse and the Use of Instagram as a Tool of Resistance. Based on the study, the researcher found the dominant discourse about bapakism and normative-bureaucratic and it was examined that the discourse really abuses the academic freedom for educational institution, and as the alternative discourse is about resistance-challenge and critical discursive that produce
