Abstract

Rukma Tanaya Citraningrat. 2008. The use of steelheart’s songs to improve the fluency of speaking. Final Project. English Education Program Bachelors Degree, Semarang State University. Supervisors: I. Dr. Abdurachman Faridi M. Pd and II. Dra. C. Murni Wahyanti M.A Keywords: Speaking, Song, Eleventh Grade Students The objective of this research is to find out whether Steelheart’s songs can be used as media for improving the students’ fluency in speaking. The population of this study is the students of MAN 1 Semarang in Academic Year of 2008/2009. The number of subjects in this research was 17 students. They are the sample taken from the year XI students. The students were taught using songs. In solving the problem, the writer carried out the action research using static method called the T-test. Before conducting the teaching learning process, the writer gave a pre-test to the class. Then, the students were taught using Steelheart’s songs as the main materials in three meetings. There were three songs of Steelheart’s expressing ideas or messages given to the students. They were Mama Don’t You Cry, She’s gone, and Wait. At the end of the treatment, the writer gave a post-test to the class. The result of applying the T-test reveals that the scores of the post-test were higher than the scores of the pre-test of the class since the obtained value (11.58) is higher than the table value (7.41). It also indicates that there is a significant difference in the mean scores between the post-test and pre-test. From the result of the experiment, the writer suggests that Steelheart’s songs which are slow rock type of songs and other similar songs can be used as an alternative media to teach speaking skills.
