Abstract

The increasing worldwide merchant shipping has led to a global labor market for seafarers. This study is intended to analyze the pragmatic awareness by examining and comparing the degree to which the cadets’ recognition and rating of pragmatic violations vary. This study is a case study, employed a descriptive qualitative approach which allow the researcher to describe and elaborate the pragmatic awareness of request strategies among two group of the cadets: pre-and post-sea project cadets. The subject of the study was purposefully selected to get the data required. There were three instruments that would be used to obtain the data: discourse completion task (DCT), questionnaire and interview guideline. The result shows pre-sea project cadets used more direct request compared to the seniors. Most cadets from two groups used category IV strategy 8 imperative and elliptical phrases. The reason is because they must work in maritime situations which demands quick and clear response in hierarchy manner.
