Abstract

People communicate with others to complete what is called a “social demand”. They do this kind of activity to maintain their existence. Somehow, in social life, everyone is expected to have good manners, especially when interacting with others. This study aims to explain the realization of positive politeness strategies on the tonight show starring Jimmy Fallon. The participants of this study were three guest stars in Jimmy Fallon tonight show based on the views on his YouTube channel which has reached two million views. Descriptive qualitative research with interpretative data analysis employed in the present study. The result show that the host and the guest stars used positive politeness strategy, which consist of; notice (attend to hearer), exaggerate, intensify, use in group identity marker, seek agreement, avoid disagreement, presuppose/assert/raise common ground, joke, assert/presuppose speaker knowledge, offer/promise, be optimistic, include both speaker and hearer in the activity, give/ask for reason, assume/assert reciprocity, give gifts (sympathy, good, understanding). It can be concluded that the study found fifteen sub-strategies of positive politeness, which the most frequently used is give gifts strategy and the less frequently used is assert/presuppose speaker knowledge strategy. As the conclusion, politeness is important in maintaining relationship and creating a good atmosphere in the talk show
