Abstract
The growth of the life insurance industry in both sharia and conventional units has led to intense rivalry among the companies. By the end of 2020, the market share of sharia life insurance reached 6.29% of the overall life insurance market share in Indonesia. This number is considered to be extremely low considering that the majority of the population are Muslims. This study aimed to obtain the empirical evidence of the effect of capital intensity, leverage and the ratio of non-excecutive director on the financial performance of sharia life insurance companies as measured by surplus on contribution (SOC) with firm size as a moderating variable. The population in this study are Islamic life insurance companies in Indonesia listed on the Financial Services Authority (OJK) in 2018-2021. The samples were selected using purposive sampling method and obtained 100 units of analysis. This study used descriptive analysis and Partial Least Square Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 3.0 software. The results showed that capital intensity has a significant positive effect on financial performance. Leverage has a significant negative effect on financial performance and the ratio of non-excecutive director has no significant effect on financial performance. The results of this study also show that firm size can strengthen the significant positive effect of capital intensity on financial performance, and firm size cannot strengthen the effect of leverage and the ratio of non-excecutive director on financial performance. Based on the study results, Islamic life insurance companies are expected to increase capital intensity in the form of fixed assets in order to support their operational activities so as to improve financial performance. Meanwhile, future researchers are expected to add macro variables such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Inflation Rate to reveal better the factors that affect the financial performance of Islamic life insurance companies.
