Abstract

Speech acts are actions or utterances conveyed by speakers to convey a meaning implicitly or explicitly which in its use is usually in the form of invitations, offers, requests, orders and refusals. In Japanese, rejection is called (kotawaru) which means to reject or reject. Rejection is an answer that often appears in everyday conversation. When refusing an invitation or offer so as not to hurt the feelings of the partner, you must be careful in your delivery. For this reason, the writer is very interested in knowing how the form of speech acts of refusal is and to find out their use, the writer is also interested in knowing how the rejection strategies are in Japanese conversation. This research use desciptive qualitative approach. The source of the data used in this research is data from the drama with the title 5Ji Kara 9Ji Made: Watashi ni Koishita Obousan, totaling 10 episodes. The researcher uses this data source because in the drama there are many rejection conversations related to rejection speech acts along with rejection strategies. The data collection technique in this study used the free-of-conversation technique (SBLC) and then continued with the data analysis technique using the comparison-equalizing technique (HBS). The steps used in analyzing the data in this research are by listening to the conversation in the drama, entering the conversation containing rejection into the data card, interpreting the rejection conversation, defining the data based on the form of the speech act of refusal and the strategy of refusal, explaining the reasons for using the speech act of refusal. and the rejection strategy. Based on the results of data analysis in this study, 43 data were found, which were divided into 19 direct rejection speech act data and 24 indirect rejection speech act data. From the results of the study, it was concluded that when refusing something, speakers more often used indirect speech acts of refusal than directly.
