Abstract

A romance novel is a story centered on love and relationship as the main plot element. In its story, there is usually a special character depicted by the writer, for example, the construction of masculinity in the male character in the romance novel by Danielle Steel. Conceptually, masculinity is related to the role of men who perform well in social life and avoid destructive behavior. In Steel’s novel, the male characters were described as having specific characteristics that led to a construction of masculinity. Hence, this research showed how the construction of masculinity was created by Steel in her both novels, The Kiss (2001) and Jewels (1992). In supporting the topic, this research aimed to a) described the construction of masculinity in the male characters, b) and analyzed the similarities and differences in the depiction of masculinity in the male characters. This research used a qualitative method and presented a report based on the meaning of the events that the researcher observed from the object of research. This research was conducted using standpoint theory, the analysis of female points of view. It proposed that the source was rooted in the individual's knowledge, perspective, and the power exerted by the source itself. The first result showed that Steel constructed masculinity in the male characters through characteristics, such as appearance, personality, and specific traits. These characteristics led to similarities and differences in the depiction of masculinity, as the second result showed that Steel depicted the male characters in the same model but with different concepts of masculinity. Nevertheless, Steel created the male characters as perfect figures and it was influenced by social and cultural conditions, both American and European.
