Abstract

In genre-based writing, fulfilling and achieving the writing competence through assessment instrument is important, but the availability of assessment model which support this issue is limited and needs to be developed more. This study is conducted to explain (1) What kind of peer assessment model is currently applied for the pre service English teachers in collaborative genre based writing; (2) how the collaborative genre-based writing peer assessment is developed; (3) how the propose model is implemented ;(4) how effective peer assessment model is when implemented in the collaborative genre-based writing class. The existing peer assessment model for genre - based writing must be developed to gain the maximum quality of the assessment. It needs to be integrated into collaborative learning and problem-based learning and make the peer assessment as part of learning. The method used to fulfill the aims of the study was research and development (R&D). The model was developed at the seventh semester of the English Education Department at UIN Salatiga. There are 23 students participating in the implementation developed peer assessment model. The development phases are definition, design, demonstration, development, and delivery. The results implied that pre-service English teachers (PSETs) have intermediate to advance level of English skills including writing. They need peer assessment to develop their professionalism skill as future teachers. Therefore, the design of peer assessment started to be made by designing learning management in the lesson plan that integrates collaborative and problem - based learning and content organization based on the syllabus. After that, design was developed by making the prototype of the model such as rubric of the assessment and peer editing form. When everything was ready, the implementation of the model is brought to the class. At the end the result of the model was delivered to the lecturer to get clarification and advices for the model. The effectiveness of the model is tested using the Mann-Whitney test, which showed that Asymp was obtained. Sig. that is 0.794 which has a value greater than 0.05 which means that there is no difference between the score from the peer assessment and the score given by the lecturer. It supports that the students’ and teacher’s assessment has the same quality.
