Abstract

Crime is an important problem that must be considered for its development in society, because increasing crime can cause problems in other fields such as economic and social and can be detrimental to many parties. Economics views crime as something that can cause an inefficient allocation of resources so that the amount must be kept to the lowest possible level. The decrease in crime in Indonesia does not make crime cases disappear and does not occur at all, especially in each region in Indonesia. There are still areas with high crime rates. North Sumatra Province is the area that ranks first with the highest number of criminal cases in Indonesia in 2021. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the factors that influence crime in North Sumatra Province. This study uses a quantitative approach with panel data regression analysis method assisted by software Eviews 9.0. The data used is in the form of secondary data consisting of time series for 2017-2021 and cross sectional 29 districts /cities in North Sumatra Province. The independent variables used in this study are GRDP per capita, poverty, population density, open unemployment rate and crime resolution rate. The results showed that the variables of GRDP per capita, poverty and population density had a significant effect on crime. Meanwhile, the variables of unemployment rate and crime clearance rate have no significant effect on crime.
