Abstract

Academic writing is considered a challenging task as it involves various aspects such as research writing stages, comprehension, analysis, and synthesis of information from various sources. The first writing stage is writing an introduction which is also considered difficult to write because writers must consider what the reader needs to know about your topic before getting to the thesis. Additionally, argumentation writing is also considered challenging as it involves advanced cognitive and linguistic skills (Ferretti, Andrews-Weckerly, & Lewis, 2007). Hence, this study aimed to investigate how undergraduate students construct the introductory chapter and how the students develop the argument in constructing the introductory chapter. In analyzing the data for this study, document analysis was incorporated with the application of two frameworks; Swales’ (2004;2012) model of introduction writing, and Toulmin’s (1958) Argumentation Writing Model. The findings showed that the participants only used some steps from each Move from CARS model to write their proposal writing which indicated that their research structure writing ability is lacking and in need of some improvement. It was also found that their argumentation writing skills are still lacking because there are missing parts such as ground, and warrant, based on Toulmin's Theory of Argumentation writing skills.
