Abstract

This research discussed the stereotype of “becoming Royal” in constructing the concept of ‘Princess’ in A Little Princess novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. This research aims to identify the signs of Royal’s possessions found in A Little Princess novel and to describe how the stereotype of “becoming Royal” constructs the concept of a princess A Little Princess novel. This research used qualitative research methods and applied Roland Barthes’ semiotics theory to find the meaning and interpretation of the signs related to the stereotype of Royal that had been found in this novel. The findings of this study showed that there are twenty signs of Royal's possession that are associated with the stereotype of the upper class, and the princess concept that is described in this novel is constructed in the portrayal of the "becoming Royal" stereotype that is found in A Little Princess. These interpretations can symbolize how the Royal is seen in society, that underlying people’s perception to construct an image of a princess that is believed in society.
