Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic prevents learning from taking place in person but through online media, one of which is YouTube videos, especially in learning pronunciation. This study aimed to find out the students’ perception towards the use of YouTube videos in learning pronunciation during the online learning. To achieve this aim, case study design was used based on qualitative data methods by using questionnaire and interview as the instrument of the study concerning human’s opinion towards their behaviour in interpreting a specific object. The participants of this study were a hundred of students in grade 12 in SMA Negeri 1 Comal during the academic year 2022/2023. In accordance with the findings, students showed a positive perception on the usage of YouTube videos in learning pronunciation during online learning. They stated that YouTube videos to be useful during online learning because they could learn pronunciation at any time and from any location. Besides, it also showed that YouTube videos are beneficial for practicing their pronunciation skills in an easier, interesting way, can be watched several times for free, and helped them improve their understanding and ability in English pronunciation. Furthermore, some problems were also found in students when using YouTube videos in learning pronunciation during the online learning, such as the absence of teachers who can directly accompany them, limited data quota, video duration that is too long, and the absence of subtitles in videos. However, the students will continue to use YouTube videos in learning pronunciation because it gives them more benefits.
