Abstract

Slang is a unit of language variety that can be found in everyday life. It has types and functions when applied in dialogue—depending on the situation or context. This study aims to analyze the types based on Yule theory (2010) and functions of slang based on Allan and Burridge theory (2006) in Birds of Prey movie. The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative with document manuscripts as a source of research. In these terms one by one the words containing slang word are used one by one using dictionaries and theories related to slang. The researcher is the main instrument in this research. The source of the data taken from this research is the movie script used in Birds of Prey movie. The results point out that there are 71 slangs found in the film. They are classified into seven different types of word formation process, including blending, clipping, compounding, acronym, derivation, multiple processes, and borrowing. Meanwhile, the functions found are to humiliate, to initiate relax conversation, to reveal anger, to address, to show intimacy, to form intimate atmosphere, and to express impression. In this study, the most dominant type is compounding. Meanwhile, the most frequently-used function is to form intimate atmosphere. These results imply that compounding might a common way to form slang. In addition, slang is indeed a way to express a more intimate relationship between people.
