Abstract

Humor may have different interpretations because of the audience's diverse cultural backgrounds, individual experiences, ages, etc. This consequently results in challenges in the translation world, including fan subtitling. With a descriptive qualitative approach, this research aimed to investigate the translation techniques used by a fansubber in subtitling humorous utterances in the stand-up comedy "Fluffy Visits Saudi Arabia" to Indonesian and the target audience's perception of the acceptability. Content analysis was used to analyze the translation techniques for subtitling humorous utterances. Audience scoring was also done using an audience-response rating scale involving 22 research participants to determine the subtitles' resulting acceptability. The results showed that the fansubber used 12 of 18 Molina�Albir's translation techniques, with literal translation being the most prominently used. It was also found that most of the humorous utterance subtitles were perceived as acceptable. As to the relation between the translation techniques and the resulting acceptability, this study also revealed that some translation techniques, including linguistic amplification, linguistic compression, modulation, reduction, substitution, transposition, borrowing, literal translation, particularization, and variation, tend to produce acceptable subtitles. In contrast, adaptation and description techniques tend to produce less acceptable and unacceptable subtitles in the fan-subtitled version.
