Abstract

The study describes students learning EFL writing in online classrooms, the use of online classrooms to facilitate students in writing a text and the student‟s responses when they use online classrooms in the EFL writing class. This study is carried out by employing a qualitative approach s that is narrative inquiry. The data were collected by using students‟ reflective journals, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. The subjects of the study were the students of the twelfth grade with a total of 35 students and one English teacher. Based on the result, the teaching and learning activity was compatible with modes of online classrooms in Modes 1 and 2 which were low bandwidth-low immediacy and low bandwidth-high immediacy. The students were more facilitated in writing using online classrooms because it makes them easier to check their writing and they also got more sources and examples that help them to deepen the material presented. The teacher used Telegram to ease students‟ to ask questions about English learning. The students perceived online classrooms during the COVID-19 pandemic positively. This could be seen from the high percentage of the questionnaires. The perception related to teaching material 78.1%, online classrooms 56.7%, students‟ motivation 62.2%, and student-teacher interaction 46.4%. For English teachers, teachers can implement interesting media for teaching and learning. For the students, students can ask the teacher if encounter difficulties in online classrooms. For future researchers can discuss the use of online media specifically, with a large population, and with different types of research
