Abstract

This current study aimed to describe students’ perception toward the use of WhatsApp to learn correlative conjunctions and their behavioral intention for the future use of WhatsApp. This study employed a quantitative research design with a survey approach. For the purpose of this study, Year-10 students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Magelang City in the Academic Year of 2021/2022 were exposed to learn correlative conjunctions through WhatsApp for 3 weeks. The instrument used to collect the data was a close-ended questionnaire using five point-Likert scales. The questionnaire was divided into three parts. The first part consists of six questions about students’ perceptions of the use of WhatsApp to learn correlative conjunctions. The second part consists of six questions about students’ attitudes, and the last part consists of three questions about students’ behavioral intentions toward WhatsApp for future use. The questionnaire was adapted from Khan et al. (2021) and was tested by a pilot study involving 13 respondents from Year-10 students of Science 1 class to know the validity and reliability of the instrument. The total items tested by the pilot study 21 but 6 items among them were invalid. In addition, the valid items were tested for reliability, and showed that all items were reliable. After getting the valid and reliable instrument, the questionnaire was tested on 23 Year-10 students of the Science 2 class as the sample. The result of the questionnaire analysis showed a high level of positivity in students’ perceptions, students’ attitudes, and students’ intentions (overall mean >3.2). In detail, the mean of the students’ perceptions was 3.42, the mean of student’s attitudes was 3.37, and the mean of students’ behavioral intention for future use was 3.22. The findings of this study indicated that students expressed positive perceptions about the use of WhatsApp to learn correlative conjunctions. In addition, students also expressed positive attitudes toward the use of WhatsApp to learn correlative conjunctions. Moreover, students are interested in using WhatsApp in English learning activities in the future.
