Abstract

This study aims to determine which type of reinforcement according to Turney (1983) is more often used by English teachers at SMPN 13 Semarang, then to find out how reinforcement works in regulating the atmosphere in the English class, and the last is to find out how important is reinforcement in English class at SMPN 13 Semarang. This research is a qualitative research using a case study approach. The study was conducted at SMPN 13 Semarang involving 32 students consisting of two English classes and two English teachers. Researchers conducted observations in two English classes to collect data and then distributed questionnaires to students and teachers. Researcher needs the data from students and teachers to find out the perspectives of both sides. After that, data collection was continued with interviews. The researcher analyzes the data obtained with the theory of types of reinforcement and the purpose of reinforcement in the classroom according to Turney (1983) and then relates it to the role of reinforcement to help teachers control the class. From the results of the analysis carried out, the researcher found several results including; The English teachers at SMPN 13 have implemented several types of reinforcement according to Turney (1983), and the most frequently used is verbal reinforcement. Then regarding the role of reinforcement in helping teachers control the class, the teacher has fulfilled the objective of doing reinforcement in the classroom, indicating that reinforcement helped the teachers control the class. Lastly, regarding the importance of reinforcement, both teachers and students agree that reinforcement is necessary for every lesson.
