Abstract

Generally, most people communicate verbally and non-verbally using languages in delivering their intentions. The way people communicate in spoken or written language represents their characters. In this era, character-building education is urgent to be learnt by people. Most people are lack of character-building education. The purpose of this study is to describe, disclose and explain the Attitude realization in the short story for students’ character building. The Appraisal System theory by Martin and White (2005) is applied in analyzing this study, especially focusing on evaluating the Attitude values. This study used qualitative research in discussing the Attitude realization in the short story. The data was taken from a short story “The Brother Who Failed” written by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Having analyzed the data, it was found that there are 294 clauses, and 315 attitudinal resources were identified. The findings reveal that the most frequent component found in the short story is Judgment (53.97%), followed by Affect (27.30%), and Appreciation (18.73%). Meanwhile the most frequent languages used of characters are dominated by narrator (34.18%), followed by Malcolm Monroe (12.34%), and Robert Monroe (12.03%). Concerning with the short story, Affect expresses the character’s emotions of happiness to someone’s achievement explicitly or implicitly, Judgement does not only express the characters’ opinion to another character’s ability, but also the characters’ opinion about their own selves, and Appreciation expresses the character’s impact and things’ quality. Besides, there are 6 character education values stated by Ministry of National Education which are found in the short story, namely honesty, hard work, appreciate achievements, friendly, social care, and responsibility. Judgment component has most frequent values found in the short story which can be adapted in building students’ character. Considering the impact of Attitude realization in the short story for students’ character building, the study of other components realization of Appraisal System in the short story is highly recommended.
