Abstract

The use of online learning is firstly implemented in Indonesia after the Covid-19 outbreak infected the country. The outbreak compels people to minimize face-to�face interaction that it caused the teaching and learning process forcibly occurred in the online environment. Thus, this recent study attempts to find out the perception of students and teachers towards the implementation of online English classes during pandemic era using Gregory’s constructive theory. Since some previous studies focused on the college students’ perception, this study has randomly selected 104 high school students from science and social programs of the 11th and 12th grade and their two English teachers as the respondents. To collect the data, the researcher employed online survey and interview to examine students’ perception, while for the teachers’ perception, the researcher made use of interview. Further, the findings from the online questionnaire revealed that the students had very positive perception on the online English classes. In spite of the very positive revealed in the survey, according to the interview results, students exposed some problems that they found in the online classes, such as internet connection issues, lack of interaction, abundant assignment, etc. Additionally, the teachers perceived it in negative way since they were aware of lacking preparation and experience in teaching online classes as well as lacking in ICT skill. In conclusion, with the pandemic that spread rapidly, the respondents who are not accustomed to the online learning perceived it in unfavourable way.
