Abstract

This study is a descriptive qualitative study aiming to find out the argumentative elements of Hidayat’s essay entitled Politics without Romance, Choices without Benevolence published in the online newspaper The Jakarta Post on March 18th, 2019. According to Toulmin whose method I used, six elements should be present to construct a convincing argument namely; claim, data, warrant, backing, rebuttal, and qualifier. The findings indicated that the six elements proposed by Toulmin are found in Hidayat’s essay. However, Hidayat has his way to construct his thought into an argument. Not like the order in Toulmin’s method, I found the data or evidence in the first paragraph. Yet, the text can be still understood and referred to be an argumentative essay. Therefore, it is important to have a deep understanding of Toulmin’s theory of argumentation, since determining each element needs high consideration. Thus, the next researchers who are interested in this field are expected to develop the research by adding more previous studies to make the research becomes complete and perfect
