Abstract
Project-based learning significantly aids students in deeply and practically understanding the concept of polymer materials. Through the bioplastic creation project, students have the opportunity to apply the theories they have learned in the production of real products, thereby reinforcing their understanding of polymer material concepts. Additionally, project-based learning plays a role in developing students' conservation character. Students show higher awareness of the importance of environmental preservation and sustainability as they are directly involved in the production process of environmentally friendly bioplastics. This study aims to examine the effect of implementing project-based learning using chitosan-based bioplastic products on the understanding of polymer material concepts and the development of conservation character in 12th-grade students at SMA 1 Gebog Kudus. This study employs a quasi-experimental research design with a pretest-posttest control group design. The research sample consists of 12th-grade students at SMAN 1 Gebog Kudus. The experimental group received project-based learning using chitosan-based bioplastic products, while the control group received discovery learning. Data collection was conducted using a test instrument to assess the understanding of polymer chemistry concepts before and after the learning intervention, as well as observations to evaluate the development of conservation character. The research results show that the t-test value is greater than the t-table value (4.180 > 1.688) and the significance value is less than 0.05 (p = 0.000 < 0.05). Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the posttest scores between the experimental class and the control class. In other words, the implementation of project-based learning with chitosan-based bioplastic products compared to conventional discovery learning results in different levels of understanding of polymer material concepts among 12th-grade students at SMA 1 Gebog Kudus. Furthermore, project-based learning also positively contributes to the development of students' conservation character, with students demonstrating higher awareness of the importance of environmental preservation. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that schools and educators consider using project-based learning with chitosan-based bioplastic products as a strategy to enhance students' understanding of polymer chemistry concepts and develop their conservation character.
