Abstract

As the times progress, mothers are not only housewives, but many are working mothers. Working mothers and non-working mothers have different sources of stress. Working mothers have a source of stress from the home environment and work environment, while mothers who do not work have a source of stress from the home environment. Especially for mothers who have children with special needs, they must take extra time and attention. This will make the mother become stressed which will have an impact on parenting stress for the mother. This study aims to determine differences in parenting stress in mothers who have children with special needs in working mothers and nonworking mothers. This type of research uses quantitative research with a comparative design. The sample in this study used a purposive sampling technique and obtained as many as 146 mothers consisting of 81 working mothers and 65 nonworking mothers. This study uses the Parenting Stress Index scale adopted from Daulay et al (2020). The results of hypothesis testing using Mann-Whitney obtained a significance of p 0.000 <0.05 indicating that the Ha hypothesis is accepted, where there are differences in parenting stress in mothers who have children with special needs in terms of work. Working mothers (M = 105.18) have higher parenting stress than non-working mothers (M = 34.02). Suggestions for further research are expected to collaborate with schools, inclusion, communities, and places of therapy by meeting directly with the subject so that the researcher can explain directly to the subject, it is easier to get respondents, know more about the real conditions of the respondents and get complete identity data and accurate
