Abstract

Pronunciation is important in effective communication. Understanding the wrong pronunciation can lead to miscommunication. In order to avoid miscommunication, several things that become factors of errors must be minimized. This study is to analyze the students’ problem in pronouncing English front vowels [i:], [ɪ], [ɛ], and [æ]. The purpose of this research is to know how the ability of the students pronounces English front vowels and determine the students' difficulty in pronouncing English front vowels. In this research, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The data of this research were taken from sixty-six students (66) for the spoken test and twenty (20) students for the interview. The research found errors in pronouncing English front vowels. The percentage number of pronunciation errors of English front vowel from the highest are as follow; [æ] 67%, [i:] 57%, [ɛ] 32%, and [ɪ] 27%. The average production test is 46% so that is considered "Good". The result of the interview showed that the causes of the students’ made errors are Interlingual Transfer, Intralingual Transfer, and Context of Learning
