Abstract

Dressing style and social class is one of the icons of the Victorian era. The Victorian era was led by a queen named Queen Victoria who became a fashion icon or an inspiration for the dress style of all people in the Victorian era. Dress style is one way to represent their social class. This situation is reflected in Nancy Springer's novel entitled The Case of the Missing Marquess. This study aims to find the sign of the dressing style thats represents social class during the Victorian era. The method of this study is a qualitative study. The Data is analyzed by Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis. The method of data analysis is based on the characters in the novel. The Case of the Missing Marquess semiotically illustrates the dressing style from the Victorian era. Some signs obtained in the previous discussion relating to the dressing style there is a veil, ragged, vests, bonnets, coats, top hat, galoshes, bloomers, tweed, damask, gown, widow's weeds, suit, satin, corset, dress improver, frock, boots, ties, bowler hat, gloves, waistcoat, petticoat, necklace, hairpins, waistband, flannels. Those findings signified the way of dressing style of Victorian people. The dressing style signs in the novel also determine the character's appearance in The Case of the Missing Marquess. The Case of the Missing Marquess also shows dressing style refers to social class differentiation in the Victorian era. In the Victorian era, dressing style was one of the determinants of social class. Those findings above signified the way the dressing styles are constructed in the Victorian era. They also determined Victorian’s social class in society.
