Abstract

School readiness is an important factor that affects the development andsuccess of children in their future. However, the obstacles experienced by parentsand teachers in implementing distance learning for Kindergarten (especially KG-B)students during the Covid-19 pandemic can influence the children’s developmentand readiness for elementary school. This study aims to determine the perceptionsof parents, Kindergarten-B teachers and first grade Elementary School teachers onthe children’s readiness for Elementary School during the Covid-19 pandemic andthe role of ecological factors that influence it, in terms of Brofenbrenner's Bioecological theory. This study uses mixed methods with sequential explanatory design, consisting of 2 stages. The first stage is a quantitative research using aquestionnaire. Data collection was carried out online (using google form) fromAugust 15, 2021 – September 30, 2021. The sample was determined usingclustered sampling (determining schools) and random sampling (determiningrespondents). There were 326 parents, 34 Kindergarten-B teachers and 39Elementary School teachers from 16 private schools in Semarang whoparticipated in this research. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysistechniques and independent sample t-test. The second stage, the research wascarried out qualitatively, by conducting online interviews with 12 parents, 10Kindergarten-B teachers and 7 Elementary School teachers. Qualitative data wereanalyzed using theme analysis techniques. The results showed that the children’s readiness for Elementary Schoolduring the Covid-19 pandemic was in the high category in counting and finemotor skills, but in the low category for socio-emotional and language aspects. The children's readiness is influenced by school’s readiness, teacher’s readinessand family readiness in implementing distance learning. Based on the independentsample t-test, it was found that parents have different perceptions of kindergartenB teachers and first grade Elementary School teachers on the children’s readinessfor Elementary School.
