Abstract

Reading Interest is a strong desire accompanied by one's efforts to read. Reading interest does not suddenly arise from a person. However, reading interest arises from encouragement and the right environment. The COVID-19 pandemic has limited the encouragement and environment that fosters primary school students' reading interest. Therefore, this study focuses on the reading interest of elementary school students during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the reading interest of elementary school students. This research method is descriptive qualitative. The data were analyzed through qualitative descriptive. This means that the researcher read all the data collected, then interpreted it based on the data, theories, and phenomena recorded during the data collection process. It was found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the reading interest of elementary school students decreased. This was proved from the results of the study that elementary school students tend to take reading activities as normal. In addition, reading activities tend to be only because of the teacher's task, asked by parents. The duration of student reading was also only limited from 10 to 30 minutes. This is due to limitations during the pandemic. This resulted that students began to assume that reading activities were normal routines, without any motivation and feelings of happiness when doing it.
