Abstract

The biology learning process is distinguished by material that is relevant to the real-world problems. Some issues in material of biology can help students to improve their critical thinking skills. Problem-Based Student Worksheet is a type of learning media that can assist students in developing critical thinking skills. The aims of this research were to develop problem-based Student Worksheet, validity test, determine teacher and students’ responses, and evaluate the effectiveness of problem-based Student Worksheet products that designed to improve students’ critical thinking skills on Coordination System material. The ADDIE model was used in this research as a development model. The implementation stage of this research utilized a one-group pretest and posttest design. The research observation was carried out at SMA Negeri 9 Semarang. The data collected in this research include (1) the product’s validity, which was obtained from material experts and media experts through a questionnaire and analyzed descriptively by percentage; (2) teacher and student responses, which were obtained from teacher and student assessment through response questionnaires and analyzed descriptively by percentage; and (3) learning outcomes (critical thinking skills), which were measured using a test instrument with indicators of critical thinking skills and N�gain test. The result of media validation obtained a percentage of 75% with valid criteria by media experts and a percentage of 81.88% with very valid criteria by material experts. The response of the teacher achieved a score of 90.44% with very good criteria, whereas the response of the students achieved a score 84.37% with very good criteria. A large-scale test was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the problem-based Student Worksheet product developed. Students in class XI MIPA 1 had 88.89% classical mastery, while students in class XI MIPA 2 had 83.33% classical mastery. The N-gain in XI MIPA 1 class was 0.71 in the high category, and 0.64 in the medium category. As a result of these findings, the problem-based Student Worksheet of the Coordination System material developed can be concluded to be valid for use in the learning medium to improve students’ critical thinking skills. The indicators measured in this study are (1) identifying problems; (2) collect relevant information; (3) express opinions; and (4) draw conclusions.
