Abstract

The problems found in learning biology at SMA Negeri 1 Demak is the unavailability of teaching materials that use socio-scientific issues. The lack of teaching materials that relate the material to real issues or problems reduce the essence of meaningful learning that should be obtained by students to construct students understanding of human reproductive system material. Students critical thinking ability are still lacking because the involvement of students on discussion activities in class is low. Therefore, an e-module based on socio-scientific issues of human reproductive system was developed. The purpose of this research is to describe the characteristics of e-module, analyze the feasibility, and analyze the improvement of students critical thinking ability on the human reproductive system material. The type of this research is research and development which modifies Sugiyono’s research design. The improvement of critical thinking ability using pre�experimental one group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were material and media experts to obtain e-module feasibility results, students of XI MIPA 9 and biology teacher to obtain their responses to the e-module, and students of XI MIPA 6 to obtain data on critical thinking ability on human reproductive system material. The data collection method is by using a feasibility questionnaire, user response questionnaire (students and teacher), and test (pretest-posttest essay questions). The results show that the characteristics of e-module are based on of socio�scientific issues, self contained, adaptive, user friendly, and attractive appearance. The feasibility result by material expert is 98,9% with very valid criteria, media expert is 97,8% with very valid criteria. The students response to the e-module was 90,9% with very good criteria, and the teacher was 95,4% with very good criteria. The students critical thinking ability after pretest and posttest are different. The average of n-gain score in aspect of critical thinking ability is 0,62 with medium criteria. The conclusions of this research are e-module based on socio-scientific issues of human reproductive system material fulfill the characteristics of the e�module, very suitable to be used in learning, and effective to improve students critical thinking ability of SMA Negeri 1 Demak in medium criteria.
