Abstract

Forsterite powder has been successfully synthesized from magnesium oxide (MgO) powder and amorphous silica powder (SiO2 ) by ultrasonic method, followed by calcination at 950°C. Amorphous silica powder is produced from the local natural sand purification process. Forsterite powder compound analysis was used by FTIR spectroscopy, phase analysis using XRD diffraction patterns, and morphological analysis using SEM images. The results showed that the sample powder consisted of forsterite (Mg2SiO4 ), periclase (MgO) and cristobalite (SiO2 ) phases. It is also obtained that the weight percentage of the sample powder phase is dominated by forsterite (~60 wt%) so that it can be claimed that forsterite is still the main phase while periclase and cristobalite are minor phases.
