Abstract

Social Status is not necessary associated with activities which enhance economic growth for instance,nobleman, and navy often have high social status. This situation is reflected in jane Austen's persuasion which portrays the social life and paradigm of upper and lower classes in England. Industrialization in England had a wonderful impact on the life of the but, it's miles simple that this phenomenon has led to the occurrence of sophistication variations that are judged from diverse aspects of lifestyles. Since there are differences in the interests of each class, conflict is inevitable. The aims of this study are to marriage struggle as a result of social status in Jane Austen's persuasion and to explain the reflection of the world vision of a society where the author lived in the novel. The methodology used in this study was the qualitative method. It was analyzed by using Structuralism theory by Levi-Strauss. By using the Levi-Strauss’structuralism theory, The method of data analysis is based on the conflicts of the characters in the novel, the upper and lower classes. Austin shows that what occurred is rooted in differentiation in stratification. In British society which is still a social status society and establishes gender role expectations, England people should follow. Then, it also can be seen the way British society sees the social status behaviors in society related to marriage, family, and regular employment portrayed by the characters in jane Austen's persuasion novel. The last result is, that this study shows that the British culture society’s expectations towards social status are represented in the novel. The upper class is described as the one who is always placed in a rich position, while the lower class is always in a humiliating position. Eventually, this is differences social, and conflicts as the factors of marriage destruction. Then, society’s description is the bad result of social status in the noble environment, especially between Anne and Frederick Wentworth seemed to convey that social status is a trigger to marriage destruction since differentiations of social class have a tendency to create conflict. this struggle in marriage certainly threatens Anne and Frederick Wentworth eventually will lead them to a relationship.
