Abstract

Marriage is a human culture unifying two people to live together and love each other. Marriage was closely related to matchmaking because ancient marriages were meant to lighten the burden on parents, improve living standards, and produce an heir. British royal society encouraged young people to participate in matchmaking events in the marriage market, as in Julia Quinn's novel, The Duke and I. This study aims to explain the structure of the matchmaking system in the novel and the representation of the matchmaking in British royal society in the early nineteenth century. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research with Levi Strauss' structuralism theory. Data collection techniques were carried out by reading, identifying, classifying, and inventorying using Levi Strauss' structuralism theory and linking it with binary opposition to see the differences between parents and children regarding the perception of marriage, the mother's dominance in matchmaking, and the way matchmaking occurs. In conclusion, the representation of the British Royal society matchmaking system such as same-class marriage, courtship for marriage, marriage rules, dance in matchmaking, ballroom as a place for matchmaking, and the role of married lady as companion
