Abstract

Humans’ basic needs are the core of living a life. According to Abraham Maslow, basic needs are divided into five stages which are physiological needs; safety needs; love and belonging needs; esteem needs; and self-actualization needs. All of them must be fulfilled so that humans can avoid metaphatology, the issues appeared when humans cannot fulfill their needs, and live the good life according to Maslow. Using descriptive qualitative method and psychoanalysis approach, the writer aims to analyze Maslow’s basic needs portrayed in Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love novel; explore the relation between stages which creates self-actualization mechanism; and mention the significance of self-actualization for the main character. In the findings and discussions, the writer presents Maslow’s five basic needs which are fulfilled by the main character and all the basic needs are related to each other, they support each other in fulfilling Liz’s self-actualization needs; the significance of selfactualization for the main character are to cope with her issues relating to the metaphatology caused by the unfulfilled basic needs, release the stress and sadness, end her trauma of being in romantic relationship, and live her life well as her true self by devoting herself to god as well as enjoying the worldly pleasure. The writer concludes that through her journey, the main character can obtain her selfactualization needs and cope with the issues. Hence, she can fulfill the five basic needs and it creates a mechanism to pursue the highest needs so that she can live the happy life; the life that she dreams of, and she gets it – the stability of the good life according to Maslow’s theory.
