Abstract

Behavior is a form of emotional response. Unpleasant experiences, memories, and feelings that occurred in the past can unconsciously influence a person's behavior and are called personal unconscious. It can make someone expresses the emotions excessively. Emotion regulation is needed to control this emotional response. This research discusses about emotion regulation of cancer survivor character in The Fault in Our Stars novel by John Green. This research aimed to; (1) describe how personal unconscious influence the emotional response of cancer survivor character in John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars novel, (2) analyze how cancer survivor character applies strategies to control her emotional response in John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars novel, (3) describe what factors affecting successful emotion control of cancer survivor character as pictured in John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars novel. I use descriptive qualitative method and apply some theories in analyzing the data which are classification of emotion by David Krech, personal unconscious by Carl Gustav Jung and emotion regulation by James J. Gross. The findings of the study are as follows:, (1) personal unconscious affects behavior and emotions such as screaming, harsh words, hurting people, and being easily offended, (2) there are two regulation strategies applied to control the emotions of anger and grief namely cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression, (3) there are some factors that affecting the character in replacing her emotion, such as; positive family environment, good cognitive ability, the presence and support of survivor group
