Abstract

In this modern era, the difference in treatment of women to get the rights and opportunities to develop themselves and participate actively in society is still strong. Since, the lack of movement for developing women's abilities in various fields and negative labeling of women; weak, helpless, and left behind, this study was conducted to discover women's movement. It is aims to empower themselves that is reflected in the Divergent. The objective of this study is to explain how the process of women empowering their-self then made an impact on society. The writer used descriptive qualitative research as the methodology with the empowerment theory related to this research topic and the liberal feminism approach depicted in the woman characterization in Divergent. This study shows that the woman empowerment happened in this Divergent done by the main character. First, the woman movement, especially the self-empowering, develops her into a talented fighter who is physically and mentally drained. The woman empowerment transforms her from the unnoticeable become noticeable of her successfully resistant towards aggression. Second, the hero's action to save Abnegation members spearheaded by a woman character implies the worth of getting self-empowered and applying the liberal feminism values that hold freedom for everyone to gain autonomy in their political and personal lives. Third, the discrimination against Tris came from the people surrounding Tris. Still, through the impacts of empowerment, she successfully found her true identity, developed herself and did not discriminate against others
