Abstract

This study analyzed symbolism of color in Ms. Moem's A Life in Color poem. This study aims to answer the question on what are the meaning of colors and how do they are appeared as a representation of life in Ms. Moem’s A Life in Color by using Chritina Rossetti’s Color poem. Besides that, I aslo use descriptive qualitative method in this study by identifying the signs of colors in the lyrics of the poem. The collected data were taken by reading the poem, identifying the signs, inventorying them, and the last is interpreting them by the Semiotics theory of Ferdinand de Saussure and Charles Sanders Peirce, as well as denotative and connotative meaning of the colors. This study found the meaning offive colors in the both poems, Pink which means blushing (1st poem) and sweet love (2nd poem); White which means emptiness (1st poem) and pure commitment (2nd poem); Blue which means sadness (1st poem) and heaven (2nd poem); Golden which means a precious (1st poem) and yellow which means wealth (2nd poem); Green, this color is the most unique color in the poem as it mentioned two times in the different line which it to the different meaning. Green means envious gaze in the eleventh line while it means growth and nature in the fifteenth line (both in 1st and 2nd ). This study found that colors appeared as representation of life in the poem. As I found inthe Chapter IV, the colors appeared as representation of life by symbolizes some aspects of life by following the Western meaning of colors, like use blue to express sadness, yellow to show wealth/express healthy, and green to show envious toward others. This research also finds that the both poems uses mostly visual and kinaesthetic imageries in their lines, as well as metaphor for the figurative language
