Abstract

The objectives of this study are to describe gender and power relation and to describe the impact of gender and power relation towards women’s characters in Aldermen’s The Power. The object of the study is a novel entitled The Power, written by Naomi Alderman. This study is a descriptive qualitative study by applying Marlyn Fyre’s theory on radical feminist. The data were collected by reading, interpreting, identifying, classifying, and inventorying. By applying Marlin Fyre’s theory on radical feminist, the analysis focused on the oppression that women face and how they fight back their oppression. The results show (1) There are several oppressions that must be experienced by the female characters: Allie and other women in Delhi and Riyadh are limited in their movement; Roxy and Allie get sexual harassment from persons who are close to them; In Molodva, women are become sexual slave; and women also face a state called double bind situation in which their options are limited to a few and all of them subject them to penalty. (2) With the electrical power that women possess, Females characters in The Power may develop women's resistance in order to free themselves from oppression. Women creates their own world by several actions: Allie using religious doctrine, women in Delhi and Riyadh take over the city, Tatiana reorder the politics, and Margot creates female army. Moreover, they also eliminating men from their society.
