Abstract

Contradictory side define as ambivalence, a condition when a person has simultaneous conflicting reactions, beliefs and feelings towards same object. It can be founded in daily life expressing confusion regards something what people want and need. The researcher analysed contradictory side of the main character in Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The objectives of the study were to find out the overview of the main character’s id, ego, superego and defence mechanism which shows the reaction from his contradictory side, how contradictory side of the main character appears and the impacts of the contradictory side to people around him in the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Psychological approach is used by the researcher to help herself in doing the analysis supported by Sigmund Freud’s theory. The study shows with his lack of knowledge, the character was confusing what decision he wants to take after creating the monster because the monster not living in condition that the main character hoped for. The character was faced by the condition which made him doing several defences for his action. He suddenly ruined his life by making decision which full of doubt and his action gave some impacts toward people around him
