Abstract

Merry Riana: Million Dollar Dream tells a success story of a Chinese-blood person named Merry Riana set in 1998 which shows very strong identity political nuances. This biographical book presents Merry Riana as a person who motivates and becomes a good example for its readers. However, beside the main theme, there are scattered messages leading to the construction of ethnic Chinese identity and position in Indonesia, closely related to the historical background used. The study tries to highlight the historical construction, identify the reconstruction of Chinese stereotypes as reflected in the book, and explain the implication and the alternative meaning the book offers. A qualitative descriptive method is applied in conducting this research with new historicism theory used for data analysis. The findings showed there is a relation between the text and history of Indonesia in 1998 and Chinese stereotypes construction which gives rise to several impacts on the image of the Chinese community.
