Abstract

Urban life and modern technology play big roles in changing human life, especially adolescene in their transitional period. Furthermore, it can trigger juvenile delinquency when young adults tend to be engrossed in them while lacking in parental affection. Kanae Minato‘s novel, Confessions, portays Watanabe and Shimomura as the juvenile delinquent. This research aims (1) To identify what conflict the main characters as teenagers have, (2) To analyze how the main characters‘ juvenile delinquency is portrayed in the novel, and (3) To explain how the characters‘ delinquency correspond with technophilic culture and familial dysfunctionality. The methodology used in this research was descriptive-qualitative. The analysis of this research used Santrock‘s juvenile delinquency theory. The result shows that Watanabe‘s conflict is due to lack of attention and affection from his parents, whereas Shimomura‘s conflict is due to his mother‘s restraints which resulted in his technology misuse. Both characters committed juvenile delinquency in the form of status offenses and index offenses. The imbalance of characters parents‘ role as part of Japanese urban families resulted in their inability to nurture emotions but made them experiment on making gadgets to prey on their peers. Lacking in parental guidance, these young adults‘ mischivous acts become a youth crime since it has led to others‘ demise
