Abstract

The topic of this study is to reveal ambivalence as a result of the main characters’ anxiety reflected in the Heartbreakers by Ali Novak. This paper is aimed to describe (1) How is the ambivalence as the results of the main character’s anxiety reflected in Novak's The Heartbreakers (2) How does the main character develop her personality in relation with the anxiety that results in ambivalence. The object of the study is a novel entitled The Heartbreakers written by Ali Novak. The novel is analyzed using descriptive qualitative study by generating data in the form of words. This study is applying Freudian psychoanalytic theory. The results show (1) Stella as the main character, experiences ambivalence in cognitive of her psychological aspects. She has two opposite feelings that make she feels indecisive. Her ambivalence comes because of her anxiety. (2) Stella as the main character, develops her personality in relation with the anxiety that results in ambivalence by using defense mechanism.
