Abstract

This research analyzed the use of discourse markers (DMs) in Collider Interview channel. This research analyzed the use of discourse markers (DMs) in Collider Interview channel, the widely watched interview channel. The researcher focused on Spider-Man: No Way Home exclusive interviews because it provides very rich data on DMs within the interview. The research used Fung & Carter’s (2007) and Maschler’s (2009) theories to find the results. The analytical framework contains four main functional categories: interpersonal, referential, structural and cognitive DMs. Each DM was analyzed. Each DM was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, in order to identify the functions it serves in its original context. The findings demonstrate that the DMs found 163 marks. Frequent marks that are used in the interview are interpersonal markers (e.g., yeah, absolutely, actually) and referential DMs (e.g., and, or, because). This is because the purpose of the interview is to entertain. That's why it pursues interpersonal relationship personally established. It reinforces the interlocutors' communicative goals and expands the discussion context. The fewest marks found in the interview are Structural marks (e.g., so, by the way). The last marks are Cognitive Markers (e.g., I think, I mean, like). It is because the interview used a little opinion and argument in detail about the topic and limits the extent of the audience's discourse correlation search. All of the speakers utilized the types of DMs to share the knowledge, connect the ideas, know the speaker's thoughts, and maintain their speaking turns. The findings of this research revealed that all types and functions of DMs aid speakers and listeners in understanding the context of the interview
