Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the perceptions and preferences of EFL students towards the use of social media as an alternative English learning source. The subjects of this study were 35 eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Semarang. This final project employs a qualitative descriptive study to explain the data gathered from the participants through a questionnaire and interview that are adapted from Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The questionnaire was then given to 35 students and then based on the questionnaire 12 students were selected for an interview. The results revealed that students have positive perceptions towards the use of social media as an alternative English learning source based on the perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and attitude towards using social media as an alternative English learning source. Based on the students’ preferences, students mostly use their social media for entertainment purposes. Moreover, Instagram was chosen as their most preferable social media for daily use, while YouTube was chosen as the most preferable social media for learning English. For the form of the content or materials, spoken form is slightly preferable to written form. Students mostly use their social media platforms for enriching their vocabulary. However, even though students have positive perceptions, the data indicate that students still rarely use their social media for learning English. Therefore, motivation and encouragement are needed to make students use their social media as an alternative English learning source more often as they already have positive perceptions towards it.
