Abstract

One of the aspects of learning the English language in terms of speaking is pronunciation. Sometimes some of the learners encounter trouble acquiring good pronunciation. The objectives of this research were to find the error in the diphthong words and the factor causing the errors. Descriptive qualitative was used in this research. The participants were 30 English education students at Universitas Negeri Semarang that had studied segmental features in class. The instruments used in this research were documentation and a questionnaire to answer those two objectives. Based on the data result, showed that the [əʊ] diphthong reached the highest error percentage of 37%. Then, followed by [εə] diphthong which gained 35%, the [ʊə] diphthong of 33.33%, the [ɪə] and the [ɑʊ] diphthong of 30%, the [eɪ] diphthong of 20%, the [aɪ] diphthong at 5%, and the lowest percentage was attained in the [ɔɪ] diphthong of 0% error. According to the questionnaire results which were basically to find the participants’ background and their understanding of diphthong, the researcher concluded that interlingual, intralingual, and developmental errors were the factors causing the errors
