Abstract

This study investigates increasing student engagement through Educaplay in learning English. This study aimed to discover: (1) How to teach English using Educaplay in fifth grade Al Aziz SDIH Luqman Al-Hakim Batang, (2) How Educaplay can improve the engagement of students in fifth grade Al Aziz English learning at SDIH Luqman Al-Hakim Batang. This research design is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) developed by Kemmis and Mc Taggar (2014). The research report is described using a qualitative method based on facts and events during the research. The researcher collaborated with the teacher in conducting research conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The results of this study are the results of interviews and an observation checklist to determine students' engagement in learning English for the fifth grade Al Aziz of SDIH Luqman Al Hakim Batang. The practical aspects of student engagement were categorized into Effort, Initiative, Disciplined, and Attention. The teacher's perception states that Educaplay is a medium that can increase student engagement and support the teaching process to achieve learning objectives. The results of observations support the teacher's perception, each category of student engagement attitudes has increased. The Effort category increased from 6.19 in the first cycle to 7.71 in the second cycle. Furthermore, the Initiative category increased from 7.00 in the first cycle to 9.00 in the second cycle. Then, the Disciplined category increased from 7.24 in the first cycle to 8.33 in the second cycle. Last, the Attention category increased from 7.67 in the first cycle to 12.05 in the second cycle. These findings indicate a significant increase in student engagement in teaching and learning. Based on the findings, Educaplay can increase student engagement in English learning for fifth grade Al Aziz SDIH Luqman Al Hakim Batang academic year 2021/2022.
