Abstract

Each text in writing has its characteristics which belong to its social functions, generic structures, and linguistic features. Understanding the linguistic elements that help create the type of text expected in school is essential for effectively assessing student language development and designing an effective curriculum for student learning. This research aims to find how students in Junior High School employ the elements of linguistic features of recount text through their writings. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The data was collected by analyzing the linguistic features of 10 recount texts written by second graders from SMPN 1 Pageruyung. The texts were studied using Gerott and Wignell’s theory. The findings indicate that texts 3, 6, 7, and 10 have fulfilled the requirements with linguistic features such as specific participants, temporal conjunctions, time circumstances, and location conditions, material process, and past tense. These aspects are interconnected and included in the text, indicating that most of the students understand how to construct recount material following the theory. Nevertheless, students need to learn more about the recount text's linguistic features and do revising on their writings before they become the final product. This conclusion was obtained from the fact that there were still many texts they made that did not meet the elements of recount text’s linguistic features.
