Abstract

This study aimed to determine students' perception of the importance of vocabulary mastery to support speaking ability in the classroom and how it affects vocabulary mastery in speaking skills at SMP N 1 Batealit Jepara. The subjects of this study were students of class VIII E at SMP N 1 Batealit Jepara. This study observes the perception of class VIII E students in mastering vocabulary, which can help improve the students' speaking skills. The focus of this research is to find out more deeply about the relationship between vocabulary mastery and students' speaking ability. The choices consist of vocabulary mastery, speaking ability, the correlation between vocabulary and speaking ability, and the role of vocabulary mastery in students' speaking ability. This research uses a qualitative case study. This study's data collection method uses analysis and the Guttman scale to calculate the results. The results of this study are (1) students consider that mastering vocabulary is very important; (2) students assume the ability to speak in English is needed in communicating; (3) students consider that there is a close relationship between vocabulary mastery and speaking ability, (4) students consider that vocabulary mastery plays an essential role in spoken English. In conclusion, the students of class VIII E SMP N 1 Batealit Jepara consider that vocabulary mastery is closely related and affects the students' speaking ability
